I seldom travel to the Upper East Side. But seems I've exhusted and grown tired of all local restaurants in midtown. I've always heard of Rectangles Yemenite Israeli restaurant but have never been. In short AMAZING !!!. From the hummus, cigars, falafel, Melawach, to the lamb shank it was all amazing. I've forgotten what authentic Israeli food is suppose to taste like. The service was fast and polite, the atmosphere was beautiful. Parking was the only drawback. The food was plentiful and cooked perfectly. They even have a sidewalk cafe, full bar and broadcast european soccer games on the TV. What else could you ask for. Only wished they could deliver to midtown. ..I will be back...often. AWESOME. My husband, friend, and I went to Rectangles on Thursday, 7/8/10. It was my husband's and my 5th time there, the third time with this friend. Obviously, we had enjoyed previous visits or we wouldn't be there for the fifth time. My husband and my friend's husband always order the rib steak and it was always good. On this visit, my friend ordered whole red snapper, my husband ordered the rib steak and I ordered the kibbeh appetizer. We waited a verrrry long time to be served. While some olives, pickles, and pickled turnip were put on the table, my friend had to ask the waitress for bread. When the main dishes finally arrived, we were all taken aback. My friend began to remove the fish from the bones and there was next to nothing there. My husband's steak, which was listed as 20 oz. on the menu was somewhere between 8-10 oz. and nothing like the steak he'd had before. When asked, the waitress claimed everything is weighed out. NO WAY!!! My friend called the manager over. He agreed to substitute another dish for the fish but told me the menu didn't say 20 oz. for the steak. Well, I guess he never looked at his menu because, again, my friend brought the menu to him and showed him where it was stated. He then insisted it was a 16 oz. steak and, as a "ballbusteh" for almost 42 years, I can vouch that it was not! In fact, we barbecued a 17 oz. steak at home the next day and it just confirmed my original estimation of that steak. They did not charge my friend for her dinner but did charge us the full price of the steak we didn't get! The manager wished us "good night" and I advised him we would never return.
